//Going, Wanting in the Age of the Selfie

Putty Dance Company, helmed by award-winning former Philadanco member Lauren Putty White, is asking some essentially 2014 questions: Why do we take so many pictures of ourselves? Are we genuinely enriching our lives by sharing our daily minutiae with our 4,000 best digital friends? Going, Wanting in the Age of the Selfie is a multimedia, multiply artistic experience that demands from its audience a deeper exploration of our digital landscape: “Put down your smartphone for 70 minutes to consider … where is our world going? What do I want out of life? How does technology play a role?”

Via original modern choreography by Putty White, futuristic jazz and live instrumentation, plus a mix of digital media and poetic monologues, Going, Wanting’s cast will explore the way we’re wired as humans. Brent White, Putty White’s trombonist husband, composed the score, and he’ll get help on stage from Craig Ebner on guitar. Actor Christina May will provide provocative narration, while  Putty White— joined by fellow dancers Brenda Li, Jesse Jones and Erin Burgmayer—leads attendees through a unique dance fusion that will incorporate postmodern, hip-hop and Horton techniques. Sure to be as mesmorizing as it is memorable, Going, Wanting in the Age of the Selfie’s innovative take on dance performance is a welcome interactive investigation into our digital state of affairs—which, frankly, could use a little tweaking and taming. // BILL CHENEVERT
